The Drift

Drift rarely feels dramatic while it’s happening.

Most people think they’d notice the moment they started losing themselves.

But that’s not usually how it works.

Drift is a lot quieter than that... and more sneaky.

It happens through adaptation. Through responsibility. Through hustle and hard work. And through becoming so good at carrying the kind of pressure that would shatter most people that nobody notices the cost it's having on you anymore.

The misunderstanding

At first, it just felt like responsibility.

Being dependable. Being resilient. Being the one who could carry more than everyone else.

At first, those adaptations probably even looked like success.

You became more disciplined. More composed. More capable under pressure. More needed. More relied upon.

And for a while, those traits probably served you well.

But drift rarely arrives as collapse.

It arrives through repetition.

Through slowly building a life around responsibility, performance and expectation… while becoming increasingly disconnected from yourself somewhere underneath it all.

You become efficient at suppressing yourself.

You stop asking what you feel. You ask what needs to happen.

You become admired for the mask.

Which makes it even harder to tell the truth about what’s underneath it.

You become loyal to the role.

Even when the role is quietly disconnecting you from your own life.

You become frightened of stillness.

Because stillness gives the truth enough silence to finally speak.

The dangerous thing about drift is that you can still look successful while it’s happening.

The signs are usually emotional before they’re external.

You feel increasingly disconnected from things you once cared deeply about.

Achievements create temporary relief instead of fulfilment.

You keep telling yourself things will calm down “after this next phase.”

You feel trapped by a life you consciously chose.

You’re no longer sure whether people actually know you… or just know the role you perform.

Next

Drift becomes dangerous when you stop recognising it as drift… and start calling it normal.

Because once disconnection becomes familiar, people stop trying to solve it.

They adapt to it.
