A Dax Moy Principle

Your Standards Become Your Guardrails.

Goals tell you where you’d like to go. Standards determine what you keep doing when nobody is watching.

What It Means

Goals are useful.

But goals live in the future.

Standards live NOW.

A goal says:

I’d like to achieve this.

A standard says:

This is how I behave.

This is what I accept.

This is what I no longer negotiate with myself about.

This is the quality I require.

This is the line I don’t repeatedly cross and then explain away.

Standards matter because they reduce the number of decisions you have to keep making.

You don’t need to wake up every morning and decide whether you’re going to be the person you said you wanted to be.

You’ve already decided.

The standard becomes the guardrail.

Not because you’re incapable of ignoring it.

Not because you’ll never wobble.

Not because being human suddenly became inconvenient.

But because you’ve drawn a line around what you’re willing to repeatedly permit.

This matters particularly under pressure.

Anyone can look disciplined when life is easy.

Standards reveal themselves when you’re tired.

Busy.

Frustrated.

Scared.

Tempted.

Or when nobody else would know if you quietly let yourself off the hook.

That’s when the standard stops being something you wrote down...

...and starts becoming evidence of who you are.

Part of the collection of principles, frameworks and ideas that shape how I think about identity, transformation, performance, business and life.
