A Dax Moy Principle
Discipline Means Putting Your Future Self First.
Discipline isn’t punishment. It’s refusing to repeatedly make your future self pay for what your present self wants.
What It Means
People often talk about discipline as hardness.
Grinding.
Forcing.
Pushing through.
Making yourself do things you don’t want to do because apparently being miserable is evidence that you’re serious.
I don’t see it that way.
Discipline is a relationship between you and the person you’re becoming.
Every decision has a recipient.
Sometimes that recipient is you right now.
Sometimes it’s you tomorrow.
Next week.
Next year.
Do I spend the money now and leave him the debt?
Avoid the conversation and leave him the mess?
Skip the work and leave him the deadline?
Ignore my body and leave him the consequences?
Say yes to something I don’t really want and leave him the commitment?
Or do I make a decision today that makes his life better?
That doesn’t mean the future self always wins.
Sometimes the right decision IS rest.
Play.
Pleasure.
Spending the money.
Saying yes.
Discipline isn’t automatically choosing the harder option.
It’s refusing to keep handing tomorrow the bill for choices you know you’ll regret today.
Seen that way, discipline becomes less about domination...
...and more about loyalty.
